The first website I made was a fan site for KXLU some time around 1992, I believe. Loyola Marymount didn’t own the domain kxlu.com yet, the students didn’t have access to the internet on campus. This was before Yahoo existed.
Although I’d been listening for years, I really didn’t know about KXLU’s history or what to write, so I simply made it a one page site with the schedule, which a dj was kind enough to fax me.
When I finished the website, I called in and told the dj it was done and gave them the very easy to remember URL, which was something like http://hiiway.net/users07/cakebread/homepage.html
A couple months later, he found a friend with a nerd for a dad and was able to check it out. He sent me a black KXLU shirt with a robot on the front, leftover from the Fundrazor, which I treasured.
Besides me and the dj, and whoever I showed it to on my own computer, I’m pretty sure nobody elese ever saw it.
I’m about to make another KXLU fan site, this time with software I’m writing called College Radio TV. This is the playout system that powers Rock Los Angeles, streaming audio and synchronized video.
In addition to the legacy Shoutcast or Icecast that most college and community radio stations still use today, it feature HLS audio stream, which makes listening on mobile and spotty wifi much more reliable.
With College Radio TV you can do remote broadcasts from a sporting event with live video or just audio.
